Ocean State Umpires has ended its 10th season of baseball, and looking to get an early start on a potential good next year, OSU is beginning its recruitment process for the Class of 2010 NOW! The Bridge to Democracy Afterschool Program at the Learning Community Charter School is a school based, 21st Century Community Learning Center funded program. We offer students quality programming to maximize creative abilities, critical thinking, self confidence, student voice and skill building through experience with a variety of enrichment activities and programs appropriate to our students age in grades 3-6. In our first semester we worked with providers from across the Rhode Island community as well as with our neighbors in Massachusetts. Currently the Bridge to Democracy program is seeking a provider with experience instructing middle/elementary science to run a class that explores the scientific inquiry process through hands-on experiments. The structure of the desired program revolves strictly around formulating focus questions, hypothesizing and predicting outcomes, conducting experiments and producing claims and evidence. The objective is to give students first hand experiences in the beginning of the program so by the end students will have the opportunity to formulate their own testable questions, plan appropriate tests and experiments and utilize collected data to produce claims and evidence of their findings.

Description of Science Program:

� Follows traditional scientific method
� Appropriate and adaptable for 3rd-6th graders
� Allows students to perform hands-on experiments, engage directly with teacher to perform an experiment
� Prepares students to develop their own testable question and appropriate experiment

Description of Science Experiment Provider:

� Works with youth to develop their understanding of inquiry and the scientific process
� Prepares engaging and challenging experiments that relate to the fields of earth and space science, life science or physical science as developmentally appropriate

� Develops students confidence in science and ability to perform experiments
� Introduces the Socratic method to develop the inquiry process

Required Qualifications:

� Strong desire to work with middle/elementary youth

� Knowledge of elementary/middle school science standards
� 2 years experience with instructing middle/elementary science
� Proven effective classroom and materials management in a hands-on setting.

Work Period:

The science program will operate 2-3 times a week. The position is currently temporary but can be made permenant.

The position is paid through a W-9 contract form and bi-weekly invoicing. An hourly wage is based on experience and skill set. There is separate funding for materials, field trips, and a planning period.

We are looking for part time data collectors to be trained on and administer child-friendly standardized assessment tools (Expressive and Receptive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test; Letter and Word Recognition, Spelling, and Comprehension subtests of the Woodcock Johnson; Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening; and preLAS). We are looking for applicants who are very detail oriented, have regular email and cell phone access, a B.A., and two years of early childhood experience. Data collectors must be willing to travel to Portland, Maine for the trainings and other occasional meetings. Bilingual Spanish and English data collectors are preferable, but this is not a requirement.

We are testing children�s receptive and expressive language development and their knowledge of the alphabet, letter sounds, print awareness, and rhyming for an Early Reading First project funded through the Federal Department of Education. All assessment tools are administered to preschool children (ages 3-5) at early childhood programs in Woonsocket and East Providence. Applicants should live near these areas.

We assess children twice a year over a two month time span between September and November and then again between April and June. Assessments are administered Monday through Friday in the morning and/or in the afternoon after nap. We are looking for someone who is able to work between 10-20 hours a week (to be decided when hired) and to have flexibility in his/her schedule. In addition to administering the assessments to children, there may be some additional data collection tasks (collecting data on the classroom and helping to collect parent surveys). You would be trained in all tools. It is imperative that applicants are able to administer the assessments precisely according to the instructions.

Data collectors are required to make their own schedules, keep assessment materials organized and on hand, complete score sheets and summaries in a timely manner, and deliver them to the Project Assistant or Evaluation Manager for data entry. This data is extremely important and sensitive. Data collectors need to prove a high level of responsibility, ability to follow instructions, and attention to detail.

The Bridge to Democracy Afterschool Program at the Learning Community Charter School is a school based, 21st Century Community Learning Center funded program.
