Welcome. For your consideration is an original vintage oil painting of a coastal landscape by well-listed Provincetown, Massachusetts artist Ernest G. Principato (1945-). This impressionist oil painting was completed on a panel and signed by the artist on the lower right, E. Principato, '79. There is a label on the back with the title of the painting "Summer Sailing" and the artist's signature and date for the painting 1986. The artist was painting in Provincetown, Massachusetts around the time of this painting. It's likely that this coastal landscape was completed somewhere on the Cape Cod, MA shoreline. In it, the artist uses all his mastery of colors to bring this painting to life.

This painting is in very good condition. Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair. Unframed the painting measures 12" in height x 20" wide and together with the original wooden frame it measures 18" x 26". The handsome vintage frame is in overall good condition with some minor abrasions consistent with its age. This impressionist landscape is an excellent example of this artist's work. It truly is a gem!
As for the artist, Ernest G. Principato was born in Massachusetts in 1945. He started his art training at an early age, having the good fortune to have the high school art teacher take a personal interest in his talent. At thirteen he received private art instruction and general guidance concerning his artistic development. After military service Ernest attended the Vesper George School of Art where many well-known artists preceded him.
Since 1970 Principato has been painting in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where his artistic connection with P-town still remains. Also in 1970 he began taking lessons from portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler and with Richard Seyffert at the Art Students League in New York City. The following year Ernest was selected to study with renowned Boston painter Robert Douglas Hunter, and two years later was invited and accepted into the atelier of R.H. Ives Gammell at the Fenway Studio Building in Boston, Massachusetts.
Then Mr. Principato returned to the Art Students League where he received a Ford Foundation Scholarship and a Merit Scholarship, which enabled him to study portrait and figure painting with sculptor Jose De Creeft and anatomy instructor Robert Beverly Hale. Ernest went on to study with Robert Schultz and with Provincetown painter Henry Hensche for eight summers (one year straight through to the following summer) at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA.
He also studied with illustrators Tom Lovell and Cleve Woodward, who was the portrait/figure monitor for Charles W. Hawthorne's summer classes at the Cape Cod School of Art. Other teachers were portrait artists Cedric and Joanette Egeli of Edgewater, Maryland, participating in their summer course for portrait/figure classes offered on Cape Cod, MA.
In addition to numerous art associations, Ernest has been a member and participant in the following art organizations including the National Arts Club of New York City, the Pastel Society of America, the Society of American Impressionists, the Art Students League of New York, and the International Society of Marine Painters. Principato founded American Art Productions to expand an understanding of color as the essential element of impressionist painting.
An early collector of commissioned works of Ernest Principato is Dr. Cornelius Vermeule, Curator of Classical Painting and the Museum Curator at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. Since them many other commissions have followed and his paintings are included in many corporations, public institutions as well as private collections in the United States and abroad.
