I have available for sale a vintage impressionist gouache/watercolor painting of native American Indians on horseback by the artist Jan Worsoe. This small original painting was signed by the artist on the bottom left, J.Worsoe. The painting was not dated, I am estimating it to be from the 1960's-1970's time period. This painting is in very good condition. Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair.

As for the artist, Jan Worsoe was born in Norway and emigrated to the United States. He was known to have lived and painted in Chicago in the 1950's. Jan's earlier paintings were scenes of European street scenes and architecture. In the 1960's, he moved to the Santa Fe-Taos, New Mexico area where he focused on Western scenes and Indian art, especially natives in their natural habitat and figural portraits. These scenes are among his most sought after. While in New Mexico, Jan married the sister of Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma, who ran for president of the United States.
Their life according to his friends was a roving adventure in the world of artistic expression and his love for what it portrays. In the 1970's they lived in Long Beach, California where Jan's interest narrowed in on nautical and coastal scenes. Finally in the 1990's they settled in Newport Beach, California. It is here where Jan passed away on December 9, 2002. His paintings were exhibited at the Andazola Gallery and many other galleries in Southern California.
Unframed the painting measures 8" in width x 8" in height and together with the vintage wooden frame it measures 9 1/2" x 9 1/2". The handsome vintage frame has wonderful patina on its surface. The frame is in overall good condition with some minor surface abrasions consistent with its age. This small original impressionist painting is a gem! It will make for a welcome addition to your collection!
