Featured in Five Editions of Wooden Boat Magazine, this beautiful, timeless Launch is easy on the eye and a delight on the water.
Nicknamed “Daisy,” the love of The Great Gatsby, it harkens back to a time, before Fiberglas and Aluminum, when boats were switching form sail and steam to low horsepower petrol engines as they did in 1906 when Naval Architect, William Hand, drew the lines.
Unlike modern day knockoffs, it not only flourishes in calm waters but comports itself well as a “sea boat.”
Built of western red cedar on oak to a updated design by Harry Bryan, it was first introduced the November 1997 edition of Wooden Boat. Wooden boat recently carried an article on construction of the Handy Billy for electric propulsion. Not many boats have been featured in Wooden Boat Magazine FIVE TIMES!
Between April and August of 2001, WoodenBoat carried a 3 part series, “Building the Motor Launch Handy Billy.” The plans and building manual were ordered by an accomplished woodworker. The Wooden Boat issues plans and manual are available as well as all materials receipts. First launched in 2002, she has been garage kept and used lightly.
After getting to know the boat at the famous Farley’s Boat Works, I purchased it when it came up for sale in October of 2022. We then painted the hull with Brightside Marine Enamel and added Davey and Co. Nav lights, Ritchie compass and a new 20 hp, Electric Start, highly regarded Tohatsu 20 hp motor, while also doubling the fuel capacity and adding an automatic bilge pump. The motor has fewer than 15 hours and 2 ½ years remaining on the 5 year transferrable warranty.
Since then, “Daisy” has been used lightly and stored under cover on her aluminum trailer.
We have bought an Airstream and plan to travel extensively, creating an opportunity to own a Classic, with all new running gear, at an amazingly low price of only $19,500.
Daisy can be seen in Rockport Texas. Can be shipped.
