The Catalina 27 is one of the most prolific 27-footers ever built, known for its excellent parts availability and strong manufacturer support. Our girl Artemis has been a wonderful weekender and daysailer—roomy, stable, and easy to single- or short-hand. She was the very first sailboat my wife and I purchased, and we truly couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to sailing. She’s easy to maintain, forgiving to learn on, and very responsive on the water.
She carries a heavy fin keel that provides both steady speed and a balanced stance under sail. Her tiller is tight and highly responsive, making her a joy to steer. In short, she’s an excellent first-time boat.
Condition & Recent Work:
• Hull is solid, though there is a small soft spot on the forward deck. It’s a straightforward repair for someone handy
• I’d recommend resealing the through-deck fittings (stanchions and standing rigging hardware) to prevent future leaks and protect the interior woodwork
• No house battery currently installed. However, I added a brand-new automatic bilge pump and float switch in 2023, fully wired and ready to hook up once a battery is dropped in
• Original Atomic 4 inboard gas engine has not run since before we purchased her. We bypassed it with an outboard mounted on the pre-existing bracket and upgraded the cable hardware for steering/throttle. Outboards are easier to maintain and replace—and much safer than gasoline inboards inside the cabin (outboard motor itself is not included in this sale, sorry!)
Sail inventory includes:
• Mainsail – good condition
• 150% Genoa – good condition, with one small repairable tear
• Comes equipped with roller furling for added convenience and ease of sail handling
• Interior features a working marine head with holding tank and new marine-rated seacocks (installed 2019)
• Many removable wood pieces have been sanded and varnished, giving her interior and cockpit brightwork a clean, classic look
What You Get:
Artemis is currently in the water on a mooring, so you’ll either sail her home or arrange for land transport. She is turnkey-ready for day sailing, though I’d recommend checking over the electronics and adding a battery if you plan to cruise overnight.
We’ve sailed her happily every summer since 2018 all around Rhode Island. The only reason we’re parting ways is because we recently had a baby, and our priorities have shifted.
She’s priced to sell as-is. If you’re looking for an affordable, proven, and forgiving starter sailboat with plenty of life left, Artemis is a fantastic choice.
Boat is fully registered and comes with a clean, transferable title.
