In 1908, bicycle dealer John North Willys acquired the struggling Overland Auto Company, forming Willys-Overland in Toledo, Ohio. By 1912, they were the second-largest car manufacturer in the US. They became known for affordable cars like the Overland and, later, the stylish, powerful, small-engine Willys 4-cylinder cars. The company expanded quickly, acquiring companies like Electric Auto-Lite. The Willys-Knight line, manufactured from 1914 to 1933, became their smooth-running luxury brand. The iconic WWII Willys MB military Jeep led to the popular civilian CJ series and the Willy Wagon, the first 4-wheel drive SUV. In 1953, the company, facing financial struggles, was purchased by Kaiser, becoming Kaiser-Jeep. The Jeep brand was spun off into what became Chrysler, surviving to carry the Willys spirit.
