Engine maker David Dunbar Buick formed the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company in 1899 in Detroit, Michigan, which became incorporated as the Buick Motor Company in 1903. In 1904, they introduced the revolutionary valve-in-head (overhead) engine, powering their early success. Led by Billy Durant, Buick saw rapid growth, and by 1908, General Motors made it its first car brand. By the 1920s, Buick was a top-selling, prestigious brand, with models like the Master Six showcasing luxury. The 1940s saw the introduction of their iconic signature "VentiPorts," the fender vents on popular models like the Roadmaster, Skylark, and Electra. By the 1980s, they adapted to the shifting market and evolved from large sedans like the Roadmaster and LeSabre to SUVs like the Rendezvous and Enclave. Today, Buick is a significant player with a lineup heavily focused on SUVs and crossovers, especially in China. They are still a backbone of General Motors known to be reliable, innovative, and luxurious.
The McLaughlin Motor Car Company was a Canadian automobile manufacturer that began producing vehicles in Oshawa, Ontario, in 1907. The company formed an alliance with Buick, using imported Buick drivetrains and chassis with custom-built McLaughlin bodies. From 1923 onwards, the cars were branded as "McLaughlin-Buick" and featured a combined emblem like the one shown. The company was eventually acquired by General Motors, becoming General Motors of Canada in 1918.
