1920-1922 Elkhart Carriage & Motor Car Co. Elcar Cloisonne Radiator Badge Emblem
Elcar automobiles were manufactured by the Elkhart Carriage & Motor Car Co. in Elkhart, Indiana, USA, from 1915 to 1931. The Pratt brothers began by building high-quality horse-drawn carriages, buggies, and wagons using fine materials, but transitioned to automobiles, most notable of which was the Elcar. The Elcar became popular in the 1920s, offered with a powerful straight-eight engine, rivaling luxury brands. They were known as well-built, "assembled" luxury vehicles. The Pratts sold out in 1921, becoming the Elcar Motor Company, and even saw some success in the custom taxi market before the Great Depression ended its run.
This Elcar radiator emblem became a rectangle for the 1917 model year and then was set in a round badge by 1918, growing in size until the background was changed to red in 1920. There are two variations, one with and without the patent registration mark, and the rarer of the two is available here. By 1922, the new management redesigned the logo into a shield with a winged Pegasus and the slogan "A Well Built Car," used from 1923 to 1928 (except for the eight-cylinder vehicles specialized emblem in 1927), one of which is also available here.
The emblems, and many others, were manufactured by the D. L. Auld Company in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870 by Demas L. Auld, the company was originally known for jewelry, but is now most known as a major supplier of high-quality decorative automotive emblems and trim for vintage vehicles such as Cadillac, Packard, Buick, Chrysler, Studebaker, Pierce-Arrow, Dodge Brothers, Moon, Chandler, Jewett, Franklin, and Elkhart, many of which you can find at DSClassics.
