The Hudson Motor Car Company was founded in 1909 in Detroit, MI by Roy D. Chapin, and financed by department store magnate Joseph L. Hudson, for whom the company was named. Chapin built innovative cars like the affordable Essex and the powerful Super Six, becoming a major American automaker by the late 1920s. They were known for racing successes, such as the Horney, and features like dual brakes, left-hand steering, center shift, and dashboard warning lights. The "Super Six" model was renowned for its straight-six engine that offered exceptional smoothness, affordable performance, and a counter-balanced crankshaft. This vehicle propelled Hudson to become the third-largest automaker by 1929 and for the FBI to issue a warning to police that the model was so fast, it might be used in bank robberies. In 1954, they merged with Nash to form AMC, and the last Hudson was produced in 1957.
